State-of-the-art Equipment: Intraoral Camera

As always, it is our goal to offer our patients the highest quality dental care possible. We strive to make sure that each patient in our practice receives personalized comprehensive treatment tailored to their individual needs. As some of you might have already noticed we now have in our office a new state-of-the-art intraoral camera and computer system. It allows us to provide services to our patients that few offices in the country can.

What does this mean to you? This integrated computer system helps us gather and save important data about your dental health. Your electronic chart includes actual photographs of your teeth. It allows tracking of your periodontal condition (gum conditions). It lets us follow visually the condition of your mouth to help diagnose disease early and determine treatments before problems develop. It lets us compare conditions over a period of time.

During your routine visit you will be shown actual photos of your teeth on our computer. Using a miniature camera placed in your mouth, we are able show you problems that may require attention. The area is magnified 24 times! You’ll be amazed at how clear it all appears!

Intraoral Camera | Long Island | Valley StreamWe feel that it is one of our key responsibilities to educate our patients about their dental health and treatment. This is the team approach to dental care, doctors, staff, and patient. Our new system allows you to become an integral part of this team.

This system also improves our cosmetic dentistry services. The imaging software can show before and after photos of any proposed cosmetic services. It will show you what your smile will look like after teeth are straightened or whitened. It can fill spaces where your teeth are missing or repair chips in your teeth. All of this will be done without an instrument touching your mouth. They say "a picture is worth a thousand words." This picture can be worth a new smile. You will see a new you!

We would like to give any of our patients interested in creating a new smile an opportunity to see what can be done with modern cosmetic dentistry. For this reason we are offering a NO CHARGE Cosmetic Imaging Consultation. Please call and schedule a no risk appointment.

Recall Visits: managing gum disease

Periodontal Maintenance: More than just another tune-up.

Discussing our patients' "maintenance visits" conjures up thoughts of changing their oil and tuning their engines. Instead of "maintenance" we can call these visits recall exams.

This still projects thoughts of damaged parts that have to be replaced. So what would be the appropriate label for these regular dental exams? I really don't know. I do know how important they are, and can't stress enough how routine visits for examinations and periodontal maintenance will help you keep your teeth for a lifetime.

First, it is important to distinguish the difference between a polishing and a periodontal treatment.

  • A polishing is the removal of stains that develop on the teeth. These stains can developed from many different factors. The removal of these stains is for purely cosmetic reasons and need only be done when they become very noticeable.

  • A periodontal treatment is necessary to maintain the health of the gums and supporting bone. These visits are not for cosmetic concerns (though, gum disease can be very unsightly) but for health reasons. Gum treatments need to be done on a routine basis, possibly every 3 to 4 months in order to prevent the recurrence of periodontal disease.

Dental Care | Long Island | Valley StreamI am often questioned by my patients as to why they so often need a cleaning. Their teeth do not seem to be stained. They never had to get a cleaning more then once a year. Why now is it necessary to come in for three or four visits and then every three to four months?

I want to stress that they are not getting a cleaning during these visits. They are having a gum treatment. These people have been diagnosed as having some form of gum disease and need the appropriate therapy to arrest the destructive process of the disease.

Maintenance, or whatever we want to call it, is the key factor in preventing gum disease and keeping our teeth strong for a lifetime.
