IV Sedation Sleep Dentistry Long Island Lynbrook

IV Sedation, which is also called "Intravenous Conscious Sedation" or "sleep dentistry," is a state-of-the-art technique that is used for those that are highly fearful about going to the dentist. This type of sedation isn't used in most dental offices since it requires one to have advanced training and a certificate. IV sedation has many benefits that oral and inhalation sedation doesn't have.

What is IV sedation?

IV sedation is a type of sedation method used to relieve those of anxiety and fear when they enter a dentist office for a procedure. Even though this type of sedation is also called "sleep dentistry," you are not actually asleep. You remain conscious throughout the sedation. IV sedation produces partial or even full memory loss which will make the time appear to pass by very quickly. You won't be able to recall much of what went on during the procedure. Anti-anxiety drugs are used during this sedation. IV sedation will not prevent pain so a local anesthetic might be still necessary. Some dentists may add in a strong pain-killer to prevent pain during the procedure.

How it works

IV sedation or Intravenous Conscious Sedation means that the drugs will be delivered through your veins. If you have a fear of needles, inhalation sedation will be given first to put you at ease while the needle is inserted into hand or arm. Your pulse and oxygen levels will be monitored throughout by a "pulse oximeter." Your blood pressure will also be monitored. Some doctors, in order to prevent pain, will administer pain-killers through the vein along with the anti-anxiety medication. The doctor will also monitor your sedation levels and will adjust according on your needs.

IV sedation vs. other sedation methods

IV Sedation
Other Sedation Methods
  • The medication dosage and levels can be adjusted to allow for a constant level of sedation.
  • Great for those that are very fearful of going to the dentist.
  • You are awake so a procedure doesn't have to be compromised because you'll be able to follow instructions.
  • No airway tubes are used.
  • The maximum level of sedation is deeper than oral or inhalation sedation.
  • Oral sedation effects are very unreliable. Some parts of the procedure you will feel more aware than others.
  • Inhalation (ex. laughing gas) only works for a some amount of time and is for those that have a slight fear of the dentist. Oral sedatives are for those with a moderate fear of the dentist.
  • Under general anaesthesia the procedure has to be compromised because you aren't awake to follow instructions.
  • Airway tubes are used during general anaesthesia

Benefits

  • Safer than a local anaesthetic.
  • Great choice for those that don't want to remember their procedure.
  • The effect is quick and the drug dosage and level of sedation can be adjusted to fit the needs of each individual.
  • The gag reflex is greatly reduced.
