Almost seven years after the disaster in the south pacific and a year after Haiti, Japan was devastated with one of the most intense earthquakes since 1900. Even with the available warning technology, no one could have predicted anything even close to this magnitude. We are all sending our thoughts and prayers to the people who this tragedy has struck. We are all urging you find a relief fund to donate clothes, hygiene products, and anything to help support our fellow man in this time of need.
Dr. Raskin and the staff of Advanced DDS recognize the importance of giving back. In the month of March, for every person who “Likes” our facebook page, Dr. Raskin will donate $1.00 (up to $1,000) to Island Harvest. This is a Long Island based non-profit organization that confronts the war on hunger, one day at a time. Every little bit means something. With only one click of your mouse, you can make a difference.

Louis was woken up in the middle of the night to a unfathomable throbbing pain in his mouth. Lou recklessly rummages through his medicine cabinet (in the dark) for a pain reliever, but he doesn’t have much hope in alleviating this pain. As he lies in bed watching the sunrise, Louis realizes that he’s been up all night, and if this pain doesn’t go away, he will lose another night of sleep. Louis is mildly fearful of the dentists’ office, but it doesn’t stop him from regularly scheduling cleanings (he just needs some motivation for the more invasive procedures). After making an appointment for an emergency examination, Lou slightly regrets his decision to be seen by the doctor. In the back of his mind, he wants the problem to resolve itself, saving him a trip to the dentist. However, dental issues very rarely correct themselves. The doctor examined the problem area, and concluded that a root canal is the most effective course of treatment. When hearing the doctor’s plan, Lou wanted no part of it. He told the doctor that he would rather have the tooth pulled than go through the painful treatment.
Like Louis, there are thousands of people who think that root canal therapy is a painful procedure. This is almost completely untrue. Just like any other dental (or medical) procedure, there is some postoperative soreness. However, it’s a much better option than having your tooth completely removed, only to spend more money on a replacement implant. Endodontic issues have the potential of progressing quickly, early detection is important when your dentist is deciding on his treatment plan for you.
Let’s start from the beginning. You may think that a tooth is a solid piece of calcium jutting up from the gum line. The truth is, teeth are a just as fragile as any other part of the body. Under the calcified surface and layers of dentin lies the tooth’s root canal. The canal is filled with what’s known as pulp (I know what you’re thinking…very scientific). Submerged in this pulp is the center for the tooth’s feeling and sensation, the nerve. Most often, patients will need this treatment because there is some sort of infection inside the root of the tooth. In order to save the tooth from further damage, the innards of the tooth must be removed. Once the tooth is hollow, it is filled with either a synthetic or organic filler so the tooth’s structural integrity isn’t compromised. The final piece to this puzzle comes in the form of a crown. A block of porcelain is milled to form the permanent crown of the tooth. Precise measurements are taken in order to ensure that each piece fits a patients bite pattern perfectly.
Over the years, the root canal has come to be one of the most feared procedures in dental history. The pain that is associated with this treatment is mostly caused by the primary infection, not the treatment. Once the root and nerve materials are removed from the tooth, the pain should be gone. If you still think it’s going to hurt, then you may want to consider Advanced DDS’s IV sedation services. Patients get to drift through their dental work, and wake up with no recollection of the procedure. Secondly, there is no reason why a tooth should be completely removed when there is a chance that a majority of it can be saved. Once a tooth is removed, you may be out of pain, but the issue arises of what to put there in replacement. Times have changed, dentistry wasn’t is it used to be twenty years ago. advancements have been made in the industry to increase the effectivity and decrease the patient’s time in the dental chair.
Each coming year brings with it a sense of renewal; a new year, a new beginning. Every year, millions of people set forth to embrace their responsibility, and enter into one of the most sacred of contracts…the new year’s resolution. Whether it’s to shed the extra winter weight or to start saving for a vacation in paradise, the important part is that you have a resolution. These promises we make to ourselves help us stay motivated throughout the year, and keep us from deviating from the “end-game”.
With the New Year here, Advanced DDS looks forward to a fresh start. Even though our Zoom! promotion has ended, we still have two active giveaways that patients can participate in: Our iPad raffle is ending on January 31, 2011. The drawing is open to EVERYONE who comes into the office in January. We are still taking $500 off all Invisalign treatments. Just another reminder, the new year also resets your insurance maximums. So, schedule your appointment today. There’s no better way to start the New Year off, than on the path to a whiter, healthier smile.
